Needs vs Wants and reality.
I have said more than a few times that there is an issue with vacuum tube electronics. That is the tubes are inconsistent and have significant variance in how they sound. One tribal segment thinks this is a feature and play at the "tube rolling" game. Vendors take advantage as it sells more product. People who just want to keep a good thing going are at the mercy of the situation.
A secondary concern is Audio is competing with Musicians for the limited supply of certain glass.
My New/Old tube amp takes a full dozen of fragile glass devices. The current set are fine with decent quality US made Philips. So I guess you could call them NOS if the late 1980s is old enough for you. As noted before in this stream of words I am checking out replacements as sometime soonish I may need to replace them.
The reality is I don't need to do anything. I have another amplifier of equal or even better quality sitting aside ready for use. If a tube pops I would take 10 minutes tops to be up and running again, unless it takes the house with it. Come warm weather it goes in anyway as the ARC Cl 60 is a hot mother. I may be able to go a few years without spending a penny on glass. So fingers crossed.
But..... here comes the rant.
I want to be sure I get the best tubes for the beast when I do need them. Prices are rising. I also do not want to miss any deals that may come by. One I missed on Black Friday would have saved me a couple hundred bucks. ARC used Russian tubes in the original equipment. My usual supplier has them, but there is a war in Russia. The tap may run dry and frankly I would prefer to not provide any cash to Putin and his fascist state. Logically any in stock in North America has already been paid for.
Are there alternatives? Yes if you go Chinese. I work for a Chinese company and have done business there one way or another for decades. Cheating and fraud is considered good business there, if you can get away with it. Relationships and willingness to confirm things are essential.
If you got that you can get great stuff. Apple makes much of their stuff in China. They watch them like hawks and the company is actually Taiwanese so more reliable right there. It is possible.
I have two suppliers that source from China. Both claim special relationships and pay more to the factory AND they both still check, test, verify, and QC ALL the stuff they get. They offer several choices of the types I need. Those being KT88s or 6550 power tubes.
So the fun starts.
If you search for tests, or comparisons of various brands of tube you will find them. All the ones I found were ten years old or more, when tubes cost a lot less. Current market? Nope.
Also there are two distinct constituencies for this stuff, High End Audio and Guitar amplifiers. Hey I know a couple of those other guys. A good ranking in a guitar amp is not helping me in audio. Guitar players want distortion and weirdness of particular types. I want straight simple linearity.
If you read these reviews it is genuinely disturbing how seriously a new tube of brand x has different bass, mid-range, and treble of one from brand y, or z. In a properly made tube, and in a proper circuit IT SHOULD NOT MATTER!!! I appreciate how these are small and fussy mechanical assemblies, but in the age of lasers and computer scanners it should not be so.
Add to this is no review discusses what equipment they used to evaluate unless it was one of three types of Fender guitar amp. I mean a Dynaco Mk3 is a dead simple circuit with one input and 2 output tubes. The ARC CL 60 has 4 output tubes and two input tubes per channel with regulation and fistfuls of FETS and is an order of magnitude more complex at the same power. That would have an impact for sure.
I cannot afford tube rolling. Three full sets would cost more than a good used car. Each set would take two to three hours to adjust and bias and then a week to burn in. Time and money.
There is that nagging detail that top ten lists are not very reliable in general.
It boils down to a couple scenarios. I get a set of Russian tubes in a year or two when the current ones get tired. I could risk a set of well regarded Chinese "premium" tubes if the price is right.
And this leads to my Coda of this discussion. That other amplifier is as good or better and is a full on Bi-polar transistor beast. Is that scandalous? My Franken-Amp is a modifed Dynaco Stereo 400 stripped and hot rodded. A design from the early 1970s. It has a fraction of the distortion of the ARC, and is clearer, cleaner, and more powerful by a factor of 4. Rough, transistory? No!
Better? Well yes I heard things that are now masked in the Tuber. Yes the ARC has textures to love and admire, but there is a price to pay. They are different and are like a different type of light illuminating a scene. Just a slight change in color, something is enhanced in one light and lost in another. I am enjoying those differences.
I enjoy that I can still hear the differences.

60 Years of Doctor Who on iPlayer
To mark the 60th Anniversary of Doctor Who, the BBC is to make over 800 episodes of the series and its spin-offs available on iPlayer.
The episodes will be released on iPlayer from the start of next month, with each one having subtitles, audio description, and sign language available. It will be the biggest collection of Doctor Who ever available on the iPlayer with hundreds of episodes available with multiple accessibility features for the first time.
With the Anniversary Specials due to hit our screens, next month, viewers will have the opportunity to travel back in time with any of the Doctors through the show’s 60-year history with the classic series, as well as explore the vast world of Doctor Who with spin-offs like the Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood and Class, or step behind-the-scenes with every episode of Doctor Who Confidential – all available in one place - BBC iPlayer.
With over 800 episodes of Doctor Who programming on iPlayer, Russell T Davies, Showrunner said:
I’d like to thank the BBC for all the hard work, to get this massive back catalogue under one roof, at long last. I'm so excited for new viewers - imagine being 8 years old, spending winter afternoons exploring the 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond. And we’re determined this won't be a dusty museum - we have exciting plans to bring the back catalogue to life, with much more to be revealed!
Dan McGolpin, Director of iPlayer and channels, said:
Doctor Who has captivated countless millions of viewers on the BBC for 60 years and in celebration of this special moment we are bringing classic series to BBC iPlayer for the first time. Fans will be able to enjoy many of the Doctor’s earliest adventures with William Hartnell right through to the very latest series and the soon to be released and tremendously exciting new anniversary specials with David Tennant. We want everyone to be able to enjoy this breath-taking back catalogue, so we are making each episode on iPlayer as accessible as possible, with subtitles, audio description, and sign language all available for the first time.
As the companion to the back catalogue, the BBC will simultaneously launch an extensive online archive from the show’s history at bbc.co.uk/doctorwho, with everything from interviews with cast to written documents, long unheard audio, and behind-the-scenes photos. Together, they tell the story of the ground-breaking series through 60 archive gems for the 60th anniversary.
The archive invites fans to delve even deeper into the show with curated journeys such as the genesis of Doctor Who, where audio from former Head of Drama, Sydney Newman alongside documents with his original handwritten notes guide you through the origins of Doctor Who.
In its beginning stages, this new site will feature curated journeys through the archive to bring the show’s extensive history to life for fans – with items like interviews with cast members, news pieces, audio, imagery, and written documents.
Over time, more content will be added to the archive including a special collection of photos that have been scanned at 8k resolution from an estimated total of 25,000 prints, negatives, slides and digital images, which will give an unprecedented insight into the show with access to all areas throughout the years.
The expanded archive will also feature additional gems from over 100,000 documents, including memos, correspondence, designs, and audience research, alongside orchestral scores of sheet music.
Also being added is a selection of audio clips about Doctor Who, including radio programmes, documentaries, interviews, and music.
BBC iPlayer’s back catalogue and the online archive will launch on 1st November before David Tennant returns as the Fourteenth Doctor for three special 60th-anniversary episodes.

60 Years of Doctor Who Anniversary Marathon - Davison 7th Review
Aquitaine - Full Audio
This was good. Nothing super amazing, but solid.
The Doctor, Tegan, and Nyssa answer a distress signal out in space. They land aboard a research ship hovering above a black hole. The entire crew is missing and the only one left is the ship’s computer and maid service, Hargreaves. He says the crew has only been gone for seven days, but there are clues to suggest that it’s been much, much longer than that; including the overgrown plant life in the garden.
This story is like a fusion of both Old and New Who. We got the timey-whimy stuff that was popularized by the revival, and classic plant monsters straight of The Seeds of Doom.
In fact it’s the melding of these two well worn plot lines that make this story so unique. It feels both familiar and fresh, at the same time. Now add in some good character work for the mains, some decent acting, and a charming side character in Hargreaves, and you got yourself a fun time.
It probably won’t ever be listed as a Big Finish classic, but it’s a nice way to spend two hours.

Sound Design: Resonance – HOME
I’ve decided to go with Resonance by Home, the song that got me hooked on Schyguyy and, in turn, this whole aesthetic. The song I said I’d use before was Memory Reboot but now I feel like that track is too in your face and exciting; I like how neutral Resonance is, it makes the vibe less attributable to one emotion, the uncertain, the unclear, and the undefinable is the essence of liminality.
Research - Technical
I’ve used Reaper to essentially do what time remapping does in Premiere Pro for video, but for audio. Pressed alt T to bring up the tempo envelope, and made 3 BPM keyframes (90, 100, and 120, 120 being the song’s normal tempo) with the second transitioning to the third linearly. I did this because I couldn’t choose between the different popular versions of Resonance, sometimes I like Resonance slowed (.9x) + reverb, other times I like super slowed (.75x), but most often I like the original.
Sidenote: I believe many people who’ve listened to this song and songs like it feel the same; remixes of songs being as popular or more popular than the original appears to be positively correlated with Phonk’s popularity (my personal observation).
I looked for ages trying to find out how to remap the time of an audio clip, something that I thought should be simple as it is for video. I asked google, YouTube, chatgpt, nothing. Finally through clicking different “audio item timebase” options I found a solution that no one else on the internet recommended.
“Beats (auto-stretch at tempo changes)”
Before setting this, Reaper was playing the whole track at the BPM of the last keyframe (120BPM, the track’s original tempo) despite the tempo envelope’s time remapping between 90, 100, and 120. All sorted now.
I’m still fiddling around with reverb, thinking I might even try to keyframe particular parameters so that the sound either starts out sounding far away and low clarity and becomes encapsulating and clear, or vice versa.
Research - Academic
Zuckerman Interview video on genetic basis of sensation-seeking.
“Well, this is determined from twin studies called Biometrics of Behavior Genetics actually. Using these twin studies we initially found that roughly 60% inheritability. In heritability is the proportion of the variance in a trait that is determined by genetics. We discovered there was 60% -- which is very high for a personality trait which generally runs between 30% and 50%. So, 60% is high for a personality trait.” (Zuckerman 2009).
He goes on to talk about a particular dopamine receptor gene having existed in our species for, not all evolution, but around 50,000 – 100,000 years. He says that because analogues of sensation seeking expressions or approaches to novelty in other species linked to the same biological indicators that humans have, this is more than just an analogy, it indicates it has evolutionary history.
So, I could potentially have some visuals that come up displaying evolution as a potential cause of this ability to have a dulled fear response that gives the individual the rewarding satisfaction of completing a dangerous task.
Research - Creative Practice
Looking some examples of good Reverb and how it started out. King Tubby was a prominent figure in the Jamaican soundsystem culture of the 50s. His sound engineering work was pivotal to the creation of reggae and dub in the 60s & 70s; apparently, he’s known for basically creating the concept of remixing!
His modest use of reverb is present on the snare, it’s very noticeable.
“One of Meek’s most famous techniques was using different reverberant spaces in his studio and house for recording instruments with natural room sound—like under his staircase or in his bathroom.
Listen to the different kinds of spaces he creates with various reverbs, especially the uniquely spacey reverb on the backup vocal line: ‘I Hear a New World.’” (Trandafir, 2022).
Feedback on Videos Week 8
Last Train Edit:
Harry
What’s the mood or style?
Reminds me of JDM car core, where people show off their cars at night time in minimal lighting.
When you see this kind of video where it looks lonely or only has one subject, do you find it creepy?
In the context of how you’ve edited the video, no. But you could, the space itself is not inherently dangerous or creepy, so the space alone isn’t creepy. More aesthetic than uncanny. And the music is not creepy, sort of peaceful almost.
Lucas
What’s the mood or style?
Quite moody, feel like that song is often used in tiktoks with beauty in them or representing something emotionally motivated or trigger emotions. So that sort of paired with the color grading and the style of the video, creates this real almost reflective feeling.
2.When you see this kind of video where it looks lonely or only has one subject, do you find it creepy?
Nah, more of a feeling of beauty. It’s like the “are you lonely I can’t fix that” blade runner moment, soft. I can’t explain it really, I’d have to think about it for a moment. It’s like standing in the rain but you're not cold and your mind is clear and you’re just there. I can’t put it into words, not static not uncomfortable not creepy not warm it’s just yeah. It’s like a version of the sublime.
Carpark Edit:
Harry
I like the composition; I like how all the yous overlap.
What’s the mood, style, or emotion provoked?
Feels busy, there a lot more going on; busier. Makes me feel relaxed. Really like how it’s layed out, it’s very satisfying. Feels quiet even though there’s music. I like how the pole is in in the right third. However, you running at the camera right at the end, is a large contrast to the vibe before that; the mood and seriousness kind of changes. Really liked the environment, you leaning against that pole alone makes you acknowledge the empty environment. These environments are really interesting cuz it doesn’t look like how I imagine Australia looking.
2. When you see this kind of video where it looks lonely or only has one subject, do you find it creepy?
Perhaps the setting itself is more uncanny. If it was just one you leaning against the poll and no rotos it’d probably be creepier and uncannier. So having all those rotos there takes that potential creepiness away.
Lucas
What’s the mood or style?
Crazy how much sound design affects the vibe cuz that one feels way more stranger things. 80s vibes. I feel like that fits in with the aesthetic. Quite a similar feeling until the end running part that parts quite different adds this urgency to it where the whole rest of the video doesn’t. Totally changed the overall feeling. That running was pretty violent, I don’t think it suits at all, even is slowed down (slowmo) further.
2. When you see this kind of video where it looks lonely or only has one subject, do you find it creepy?
No. I feel like it’s like same sort of video as a guy sitting out the front of a 711 smoking a cigarette and listening to music at like 1am feeling content; It’s an in-between, beauty of the in-between of the suburban lifestyle. Kid that has to wait for a train for an hour cuz the next train doesn’t come for an hour and you’re just sat there waiting, not in a rush cuz you can’t make it come any faster.
Takeaways:
More human presence appears to take away that creepy/uncanny potential
Off centre positioning of large/noticeable objects may be an effective technique, satisfying. e.g., when there’s just me leaning against a large electricity pole in the right third of the frame, and nothing else to see except the environment.
Peaceful
A feeling that is hard to articulate, "reflective feeling" "version of the sublime" "Your mind is clear and you're just there"
The running rotoscope of me breaks the immersion and the feeling; I will not be doing this again.
(McLean, 2023) (Horta, 2023).
I want to make the point that with just a slight change of the human presence and music, the video could become creepy and uncanny; this reminds me of how exhilaration works, it often straddles the threshold of excitement and fear. Essentially, everything ties in as this description of exhilaration is liminal in itself, i.e., occupying a position at or on both sides of a boundary or threshold (being the boundary of excitement and fear).

A Comprehensive Guide to Hiring Top Singers for Your Event.
https://www.alltalent.com/blog/a-comprehensive-guide-to-hiring-top-singers-for-your-event
Music has the power to elevate any event, turning it from a simple gathering into a memorable experience. Whether it's a corporate function, a wedding, or a private party, hiring the right singer can make all the difference. But how do you ensure you're getting the best talent for your event? Here's a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process.
Understanding Your Event's Needs
Event Type:
The nature of your event dictates the kind of music that would be appropriate. For instance, a corporate event might require a more formal or classical singer, while a birthday party could benefit from a pop or rock artist. It's essential to match the singer's style with the event's ambiance.
Audience Demographics:
The musical preferences of a 20-year-old can be vastly different from someone in their 60s. Consider the primary age group of your attendees. Are they more inclined towards contemporary chart-toppers or evergreen classics? Also, consider cultural backgrounds which can influence musical tastes.
Event Theme:
If your event revolves around a specific theme, such as a '70s disco night, the singer should be proficient in that genre. A thematic alignment between the singer's repertoire and the event's theme can enhance the overall experience.
Starting Your Search
Talent Agencies:
These are professional organizations that represent artists. They can provide a curated list of singers that fit your criteria, ensuring quality and professionalism. They also handle contractual details, making the hiring process smoother.
Online Platforms:
Websites dedicated to artists' bookings or platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud can be treasure troves for discovering new talent. These platforms allow you to sample the artist's work before making a decision.
Personal Recommendations:
Word of mouth remains a powerful tool. Friends, family, or colleagues who've recently organized events can provide firsthand reviews of singers they've hired, ensuring reliability.
Evaluating Potential Singers
Portfolio Review:
A singer's past performances, available in the form of videos, audio recordings, or live shows, can give you a clear idea of their vocal range, stage presence, and versatility.
Genre Specialization:
Every singer has a niche. While some might excel in soulful ballads, others might be adept at high-energy rock anthems. Ensure the singer's genre aligns with your event's requirements.
Client Testimonials:
Past reviews can shed light on the singer's punctuality, interaction with the audience, and adaptability to unforeseen event changes.
Budgeting and Negotiation
Understand the Costs:
The singer's fee is just one component. There might be additional costs like travel expenses, accommodation (if they're from a different city), and special equipment or setup charges.
Negotiation:
While top singers might have fixed rates, emerging talents might be more flexible. They might be willing to negotiate, especially if they see potential exposure benefits from your event.
Finalizing the Deal
Contractual Agreements:
A well-drafted contract protects both parties. It should clearly outline performance duration, payment terms, any additional costs, cancellation policies, and other essential details.
Technical Requirements:
Every singer has specific technical needs. This could range from the type of microphone they prefer to sound system specifications. Ensuring these requirements are met will guarantee a smooth performance on the event day.
Hiring the best singer for your event is a blend of understanding your requirements, thorough research, and effective negotiation. With the right approach, you can ensure your event resonates with the melodious notes of success, leaving your guests with memories they'll cherish for years.

Scholarship Resources - Journals
One of the aspects that has most confounded me as I’ve tried to break into the academically intimidating world of Tolkien scholarship is the array of venues and forums through which an aspiring writer could submit their work for review. After much hemming and hawing I finally consolidated a short list of the primary Tolkien-themed journals and conferences, understanding that the lines around such interacting communities are at best blurry.
Mythlore, the journal of the Mythopoeic Society (MythSoc), was founded in 1969 as a scholarly, peer-reviewed journal focused on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and the genres of myth and fantasy to promote the study, discussion, and enjoyment of fantastic and mythic literature; all 140 issues are available online through https://dc.swosu.edu/mythlore/
Mallorn, the journal of The Tolkien Society (TTS), was founded in 1970 as a peer-reviewed journal publishing articles, research notes, reviews, and artwork on subjects related to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien; full texts of all articles (excepting issues published within the past two years, only available to Tolkien Society members) are accessible online at https://journals.tolkiensociety.org/mallorn/issue/archive
Tolkien Studies: An Annual Scholarly Review (TS) was founded in 2004 as a high-quality journal meant to present the growing body of critical commentary and scholarship on both J.R.R. Tolkien’s voluminous fiction and his academic work; published annually by West Virginia University Press with founding renowned editors Douglas Anderson, Michael Drout, and Verlyn Flieger; all 19 issues are available on Project MUSE (https://muse.jhu.edu/journal/299) and in paperback at $60 each
Journal of Tolkien Research (JTR) was founded in 2014 as a peer-reviewed, open access, electronic journal meant to provide high-quality research and scholarship based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, as well as both transformative and derivative texts based on his work, to a wide and diverse audience, to include gaming, media, adaptations, fan productions, and audience reception; articles from all 25 issues are available online at https://scholar.valpo.edu/journaloftolkienresearch
At MythMoot-9. University President Cory Olsen announced the imminent launch of the Signum University Press (SUP) which is intended to provide both classic visual texts (primarily electronic but also potentially print on demand) as well as modern multi-media presentations as well: audio recordings of academic papers, video recordings, and possibly content in more esoteric formats. It is likely that SUP will form a fifth major forum for Tolkien-themed scholarship, both established and emergent.

QUEEN BEFORE QUEEN
THE 1960s RECORDINGS
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
PART 1:
BRIAN MAY, 1984 & THE LEFT HANDED MARRIAGE
JOHN S. STUART AND ANDY DAVIS DIG DEEP TO UNCOVER THE PREVIOUSLY UNDOCUMENTED AUDIO LEGACY OF ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST CHERISHED BANDS.
This month the beginning and end of Queen come together like the cosy ending of a contrived Hollywood drama. While fans wait with bated breath for the band’s final album, “Made In Heaven" — completed by Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor with the aid of Freddie Mercury’s last demos — author Mark Hodkinson launches a new book in which, in greater detail than has ever been attempted before, delves into the pre-fame histories of Queen’s musical antecedents.
With previously unpublished photographs of Roger Taylor's the Reaction, John Deacon’s the Opposítion and even more impressively, Freddie Mercury’s Sour Milk Sea, ‘Queen The Early Years’ is a treat fans have waited too long to read. Coincidentally, six months ago, we commissioned Queen historian, John S. Stuart, to research the definitive article on the band’s pre-fame recordings, and as you’ll see, the results complement Hodkinson’s broader picture with hitherto undocumented details of Queen's 60s recordings.
We've touched on Larry Lurex and Smile before, of course, but the vinyl output of those two acts barely scratches the surface, so to speak: literally hours and hours of privately- recorded material of Freddie, Brian, John and Roger survive to this day — as evidenced by the recent discovery of the Reaction’s ‘In The Midnight Hour’ acetate ( see RC 191). So, while the rest of the world comes to terms with the fact that Queen’s recording career is effectively at an end, we unravel the untold history of four individuals' first tentative steps in front of the microphone, beginning with the 1960′s exploits of Brian May. Next month, we’ll embrace Smile, and John, Roger and Freddie's hidden amateur recordings; but first, 1984 and the Left Handed Marriage.
1984
Around late August, or early September 1963, as the Beatles celebrated the birth of Beatlemania with sessions for their “With The Beatles” LP at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios in North London, another rock legend was developing just around the geographical corner. In a semi-detached house in Feltham, Middlesex, electronics engineer Harold May began an 18-month task, helping his sixteen-year-...[ ]
[ ]...old son, Brian, to construct the world's most famous home-made guitar, the ‘Red Special'. In the mean time, Brian would have to be content with thrashing away at the small Spanish acoustic his parents had bought him for his seventh birthday. (Brian evidently mislaid this childhood guitar shortly afterwards; and didn't see it again until 1991, when at a ‘reunion’ of former members of 1984, his schoolfriend and first musical collaborator, Dave Dilloway, returned it to him. Brian was so thrilled, that he featured the guitar in the video for Queen’s “Headlong" single).
By 1964, Brian and Dave Dilloway were already recording amateur duets together, and by linking up their two reel-to-reel tape docks, they discovered that they could lay down guitars on one machine, and perhaps bass, percussion and sometimes vocals on the other. Although the technique was crude, and despite the occasional disaster, the effect was often surprisingly good. One of the earliest tapes from these primitive recording sessions survives to this day, and features Brian belting out Bo Diddley’s eponymous R&B standard, "Bo Diddley".
“This is a mono quarter-inch, reel-to-reel I found buried among various other oddments from the era”, recalls Dave Dilloway. “It certanly dates from before the formation of 1984. It was recorded in Brian’s back room in Feltham, with Brian on lead vocals and guitar, and myself on bass and drums. The track is basic, but Brian’s vocals are clear and recognisable. The guitar playing is fairly basic as well, but competent, without any real solos as such”.
“ This is the only tape in my collection of those double-track recordings. I’m unsure whether Brian himself has retained the tapes we made at the time, but I believe he usually ended up with the finished versions, so he may still heve them somewhere.”
The duo also recorded four-track instrumental cover versions of several Shadows tunes — “Apache”, “FBI”, "Wonderful Land” and "The Rise And Fall Of Fingel Blunt” — as well as “Rambunkshush”, which they learned from the Shadows’ American counterparts, The Ventures. Also on the same tape is their reading of Chet Atkins' “Windy And Warm".
Yet another reel reveals an attempt at Cliff Richard’s "Bachelor Boy", on which Brian, once again, takes the lead vocal. Dave Dilloway's theory is probably correctt; May is known to have a meticulously catalogued personal collection of Queen (and pre-Queen) recordings and memorabilia, which almost certanlly contains unfathomable reels of similar early material.
In the autumn of 1964, Brian and Dave formed a rapidly-evolving band, through which many schoolmates passed, but which eventually settled with a line-up of bassist John 'Jag' Garnham, drummer Richard Thompson, and harmonica-playing vocalist Tim Staffell. After rejecting names such as the Mind Boggles and Bob Chappy & the Beetles, the quintet named themselves after George Orwell’s futuristic novel ‘1984’. Their look was far from sci-fi, however, and they happily adopted the classic, clean-cut beat- group look of the day: jackets, or in Brian's case a cardigan, and narrow trousers; and beat boots. Tim Staffell even acquired that year’s fashion accessory, a pork-pie hat.
The band rehearsed regularly at Chase Bridge Primary School Hall in Twickenham (located next to the rugby ground), and on the 28th October 1964, gave their first public performance at the nearby St. Mary’s Church Hall. It is believed that either one of the rehearsals, or the gig itself, was recorded, but unfortunately, no tape of this debut, performance has survived the years. Although 1984 recorded almost all of their live concerts for their own critical appraisal, to save on the expense of new tape they often wiped over old reels once they’d listened to them. Nevertheless, evidence of Brian May playing live does survive from this period, and the earliest example dates from an unknown gig (Shepperton Rowing Club is the favoured consensus), recorded in late 1965. This wasn’t a 1984 performance, but rather an ad-hoc trio comprising Brian May on bass and vocals, Pete ‘Woolly’ Hammerton (a school friend of Brian’s) on guitar and vocals, and 1984's Richard Thompson on drums. The tape reveals the trio turning in versions of Martha & the Vandellas’ “Dancing In The Street", the Beatles' “Eight Days A Week”, “I’m Taking Her Home” — a song by the group Woolly later joined, the Others — and a brave attempt at the Who’s "My Generation".
The Others comprised older boys from Hampton School, who in October 1964 had issued a single of their abrasive reading of Bo Diddley’s “Oh Yeah", backed by “I’m Taking Her Home", on Fontana (TF 501). “That was good!" claims singer, Tim Staffell. “I’ve still got that record buried somewhere deep in my mind — I remember the singer, Paul Stewart's voice and the quality of the guitar sound. The Others were a pretty significant influence. Maybe not in terms of the music, more in the sense that they were already doing it, which proved it was possible."
As evidenced by the photograph included in this feature, the Others clearly had attitude, something which 1984, or Tim Staffell at least, could only aspire to “If I had tried to push 1984 in any direction," reveals Tim, “then that would have been it. Without hearing any of these tapes of our band — and I didn't even know they existed! — l’d say we probably sounded a lot safer than the Others. Mind you, they were different to us. Their guitar style was very much inspired by American R&B, whereas Brian’s never was. Brian was a unique guitar player: he was able to extemporise a much more original way than most guitar players could. I hope he’ll forgive me for saying so, but I never perceived him as having the dangerous image which was necessary at the time — the cardigan says it all!.
LIGHTWEIGHT
“In retrospect, 1984 was lightweight, a bit fluffy” concedes Tim. “It was impossible not to be naively ambitious — that was part and parcel of it — and the primary motivation to do it was what we saw in the media as the end results of success. But I guess we were realistic about it — we were at school, after all. Also there was a good deal of pressure in the 60s from our parents, and the conservative generation, to conform."
Although a version of “I’m Taking Her Home” by 1984 was captured live on the Shepperton tape, and Brian occasionally guested with the Others on stage, it's worth stating once and for all that — despite the persistent rumours — he definitely doesn’t feature on "Oh Yeah". In fact, Pete ‘Woolly' Hammerton doesn't even play on the record — he only joined the band formally later on.
In the autumn of 1965, leaving Hampton Grammar with no fewer than four 'A' Levels and ten ‘O’ levels, Brian enrolled at Imperial College in Kensington, London, to read physics and infra-red astronomy. Before breaking up for the Christmas holidays that year, he played the first in a series of gigs with 1984 at the college, a tradition he continued later with Smile, and in their formative days with Queen. Although the exact date of the event has long since been forgotten, a very poor- quality tape still exists of 1984‘s college debut. The set was a typical one, comprising the group’s broad blend of pop, R&B and soul covers, and included the following songs: “Cool Jerk" (originally by the Capitols), ‘Respect" (Otis Redding), "My Girl" (the Temptations), “Shake" (Sam Cooke), “Stepping Stone" (the Monkees), “You Keep Me Hanging On" (the Supremes), “Whatcha Gonna Do Ahout it" ( Small Faces), “Substitute” (the Who), “How Can It Be” (the B-side of the Birds’ final single, “No Good Without You Baby”), “Dancing In The Street", “Dream" (Everly Brothers) and the Small Faces’ "Sha La La La Lee".
“Our repertoire was a little too eclectic to have developed into any particular style” reckons Tim Staffell. “But the Small Faces were quite influential. When we were at school, the songs were dredged from all sorts of areas. I’d always liked rhythm’n’blues. Brian’s input would have been Beatles-orientated, Dave’s as well. Richard Thompson would have been more into R&B, and Jag didn't really have an agenda as far as songs were concerned. Because of the nature of the material we covered, our approach to the gigs was almost schoollboy cabaret. 1984 was not a dangerous, moody rock band! Which may have something to do with the way Queen evolved."
1984 oponed 1966 with a couple of gigs at the Thames Rowing CIub in Putney; and once again, a tape recorder was set up to document the group’s progress. Two reels from January that year exist: the first is dated the 15th, and features “Im A Loser” (the Beatles), “I Wish You Would" ( the Yardbirds), “I Feel Fine" (the Beatles), “Little Egypt" (the Coasters), "Lucille” (Little Richard), “Too Much Monkey Business" (Chuck Berry), "I Got My Mojo Working” (Muddy Waters), "WalkingThe Dog” ( Rufus Thomas) and “Heart Full Of Soul" (the Yardbirds).
The second, dated two weeks later (29th January), demonstrates the great variety and confidence of a band which consistently renewed its repertoire. The show began with Jimmy Reed’s “Bright Lights, Big City", moving into the Cookies' “Chains" (popularised by the Beatles), “Walking The Dog", “Lucille", “Our Little Rendezvous" (Chuck Berry), “Jack O’ Diamonds" (Blind Lemon... (cont)
(cont) Jefferson, popularised by Lonnie Donegan), “I’ve Got My Mojo Working”, “Little Egypt" and Bo Diddley’s “I’m A Man”. The band’s finale was a versión of Sonny Boy Williamson’s "Bye Bye Bird".
For an amateur band with little real pretension towards stardom, or even a serious attempt at securing a recording contract, a staggering amount of live 1984 material has been preserved on tape. Dave Dilloway, for instance, is the guardian of a seven-inch reel-to-reel, which he says reveals either a very long performance or a compilation of various unknown dates.
Either way, the tape is divided into five distinct sections, which might make tedious reading, but is an invaluable reference: 1) “Route 66", (unknown instrumental), “I’m Taking Her Home", “Too Much Monkey Business’, “Yesterday" (featuring Brian May on lead vocals), “Walking The Dog", and “ Lucille"; 2) “Little Rendezvous", "Keep On Running”, “I Feel Fine”, “Walking The Dog”, “Jack O’ Diamonds", “High Heeled Sneakers", “I Want To Hold Your Hand", “I Got My Mojo Working*, and “I Should Have Known Better”; 3) “Little Rendezvous", “Jump Back Baby Jump Back", “I Feel Fine”, “Bye Bye Bird", “Little Egypt", “Crazy House". “Lucille”, “Oh Yeah”, “Heatwave”, “Too Much Monkey Business", “I Should Have Known Better", and “I Got My Mojo Working"; 4) “My Generation", “Little Egypt", “Dancing In The Street", “Whatcha Gonna Do About It", “I’m A Man", “Heatwave", “Lucille", and “Bye Bye Bird"; and 5) “Heart Full Of Soul", “Too Much Monkey Business”, “Something’s Got A Hold On Me", “Keep On Running", “My Generation", "Tired Of Waiting", “Bright Lights. Big City" and “Happy Hendrick’s Polka".
“These are all domestic quality, single microphone recordings of early-era 1984", reveals Dave Dilloway. “It's mostly bluesy material, with some soul and Beatles songs. While the quality is basic, the sound is intelligible, although there isn’t a large amount of identifiable Brian guitarwork. That came later in the band's history, when we included covers of Crearn and Hendrix. Brian's solo vocals on 'Yesterday' (on the first segment) are quite clear, however."
For much of 1966, the band carried on in a similar vein — Brian's and the others' college work permitting, of course. For Brian May and his unsigned, Twickenham-based covers band, the highlight of the following year, 1967, was undoubtedly the gig he secured via through his contacts at the college — supporting Jimi Hendrix at Imperial. The date was 13th May, the day after the release of Hendrix's debut, “Are You Experienced". Brian May idolised Hendrix to such an extent that he'd been nicknamed “Brimi" — a combination of the two guitarists' names—so although 1984 had seen him perform before, it goes without saying they were thrilled when backstage, they actually bumped into the ascending star as they filed past his dressing-room. It’s a familar story, but it's one worth repeating: Jimi enquired memorably, “Which way’s the stage, man?*.
BLOSSOMED
1984's act had certainly blossomed by this point. Their attire was now obligatory Swinging London — or Swinging Middlesex — fare: frilly shirts, Regency jackets, striped hipsters secured with a white belt, and hairtyles extending inexorably over the ears, and indeed the eyes. “Somewhere along the line, there was an external influence there", says Tim Staffell. “There was someone calling the shots. I don’t think all that was self-motivated. It’s something I’ve never been comfortable with, which explains why I split away from it early on — certainly from Smile onwards — because it was going that way; as indeed it ended up with Queen. It's fair enough, but that sort of flamboyance is just not me. I look fairly uncomfortable in the picture of the band from that period. My idea of a rock musician is one with hair down his back, a dirty pair of Levi's on, looking at the floor, thoroughly unconcerned with the visual and external trappings, playing the most extraordinary virtuoso guitar. That was my attitude."
Back in February 1967, Brian’s local paper, the ‘Middlesex Chronicle’ caught up with the band, and captured Tim Staffell in an equally decisive mood; although here, he was more enthusiastic about the latest trend. "Psychodelic music is certainly here to stay”~he claimed. "It makes more of music than mere sound, it makes it a whole and complete art form." Dave Dilloway, who also handled the group's light show, added: “We use everything in our act, including things like shaving foam, and plastic bricks we throw around”.
The ‘Chronicle’ was obviously impressed, and its reporter had this to say about a performance by what it called “one of the most foward-looking groups today". “Standards, like ‘Heatwave' receive a very original treatment, mostly due to the sounds that Brian coaxes out of his guitar. Jazz chords and electronic sounds add feeling and nuance to numbers that are often churned out wholesale. Using two bass drums for a fuller sound, Richard's drumming, combined with the full bass riffs of Dave and the steady (rhythm guitar) work of John, provides a firm basis for experiments in sound — an opportunity which is not wasted."
“To be quite honest with you, there’s more substance in the literary content there, than in the musical," laughs Tim Staffell. "If someone genuinely thought that, then I'm surprised! Brian might have used a fuzz-box. but generally, it was au naturel. I remember in the Smile days, somebody wrote about ‘humming chords of wonder’, referring to my bass playing. The reality of it was that sometimes I did try and play chords on the bass guitar, which might have come out as a deep-throated roar, but actually sounded like a load of crap!"
“We did use to tickle about with a few lights, suggests Dave Dilloway, “but being a local band, money was tight and there wasn’t a fortune to spend on the band." As to 1984's psychodelic sound, Dave adds: “Brian did use a bit of fuzz, yes, and Pink Floyd influences and a bit of screaming guitar. He’d actually built a fuzz box into his guitar, which was fairly unique for the day, but typical Brian. If you look carefully at recent pictures of his “Red Special” you can see the fuzz switch taped over."
In September 1967, no doubt boosted by their praise — sincere or not — in the local press, the continuing evidence of their performance tapes and their recent Hendrix support slot, 1984 entered the local beats of a battle-of-the-bands competition at the Top...[ ]
...[ ] Rank Club in Croydon, just south of London. Effectively a promotion for Scotch tape, entrance to the contest could only be secured via a demo recorded on a Scotch reel. 1984’s effort duly arrived in the form of a two-track master, featuring covers of Marvin Gaye's “Ain’t That Peculiar?" and the Everly Brothers’ “Crying ln The Rain" (on stage, both tracks were usually enhanced by characteristic Brian May guitar solos, but conservatism prevailed, and they were absent in this instance). A copy of this recording still survives, carefully guarded by the custodian of the 1984 archive. “This tape is a quarter-inch, mono reel-to-reel," recalIs Dave Dilloway. “Tim took lead vocals on 'Ain't That Peculiar?’, and Tim and Brian duetted on ’Crying ln The Rain’. Brian's vocal style and tone can be clearly discerned, if one knows his voice. The songs were recorded in single takes, using a single microphone fed directly to the recorder. There was no mix facility so it has a ‘live' feel, a very good clean sound”.
The mix was achieved using the old fashioned technique of microphone position and relative volume levels of the amplified Instruments. “As far as I am aware, only the one (master) copy of this tape exists.”
As has been well-documented, after two sets at the competition (one of which saw Brian, Dave, John Garnham and drummer Richard Thompson acting as the back-up band for a singer called Lisa Perez), 1984 won the contest, and walked away with a reel of blank tape (Scotch, of course) and an album each on the CBS label. (Tim took the top prize, Simon & Garfunkel’s “Sounds Of Silence", Brian had to make do with a Barbra Streisand LP, and Dave Dilloway became the proud owner of an album by Irish bandleader Tommy Makem!). More importantly, their demo tape was forwarded to the CBS A&R department for the national showdown, although, clearly, they didn’t win.
True to form, 1984's performance that evening was committed to tape — for an unpublished review by ‘Melody’ Maker, no less — but was probably erased shortly afterwards. The twenty-minute set consisted of the Everlys’ "So Sad", Hendrix’s “Stone Free”, Buddy Knox’s “She’s Gone" and Eddie Floyd's “Knock On Wood". After the gig, the band were invited by a visiting promotor to participate in the all-night gala event which has since gone down as one of the key gigs of the London underground scene: Christmas On Earth Continued, at London's Olympia Theatre, on December 23rd 1967. 1984 was the lowest profile act at this decidedly high-profile event, and after Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, Pink Floyd, the Herd, and Tyrannosaurus Rex had all taken to the stage, they only got to perform their humble set of covers at 5 o’clock in the morning. When Brian finally plugged in his ‘Red Special’, 1984 played a thirty-minute set to a very small, and less than enthusiastic, audience.
Also from 1967, and of far more interest, is 1984′s professionally-recorded Thames Television demo tape. During his first-year of study at Twickenham Technical College, Dave Dilloway had made friends with a number of technicians, or trainee technicians, at the Teddington-based ITV company which served the London area. The station had recently invested in new recording equipment, and rather than hire professional musicians at the usual union rate, in a set up similar to the first Queen sessions at the De Lane Lea studios, 1984 were let loose in the studio to record at their leisure. Dave Dilloway's carefully preserved tape still plays perfectly, and includes the following songs: "Hold On I’m Corning", “Knock On Wood“, “NSU", *How Can It Be”, two early run-throughs of the original May/ Staffell composition “Step On Me” (which eventually became the B- side to Smile's “Earth"), “Purple Haze", “Our Love Is Driftin* ”, and medleys of “Remember”/”Sweet Wine" and “Get Out My Life Woman”/ ”Satisfaction". The session ended with a run-through of "My Girl”.

"What an extraordinary amalgam!" declares Tim Staffell today. “There’s Tamla, Cream, Hendrix, Lee Dorsey . . ‘Our Love Is Driftin' we’d have heard by Paul Butterfield. I’d forgotten there was such a large soul component in 1984!".
Dave Dilloway has the technical details: “This tape is the most recent, best and most representative of 1984 that I'm aware of. It is mono, but since it was made on good quality TV studio equipment and was carried out along the lines of a proper studio recording, with separately-mixed microphones for each source, it is remarkably good quality for its age. The material, except for ‘Step On Me', is aII cover versions, but as it dates from the late 1984 era, Brian’s playing is more prominent and effective, with his own style starting to show through. All the performances are competent — particularly Tim’s vocals and Brian's guitar; although the mix is a little heavy on John's rhythm guitar for some reason, probably the ‘ear’ of the recording engineer at the time. All tracks were laid down in one take, i.e., no overdubbing at all, so the sound is predominantly simple, as per our live versions."
And that was 1984′s swansong. In the spring of 1968, shortly afler the Thames recording, mainly due to the pressures of infrequent meetings and university studies — coupled with increasing musical differences — 1984 scaled down their operations drastically. Brian May left the band, and Tim Staffell took over on lead guitar for a while. A little later, Tim himself quit, leaving Dave Dilloway, John Garnham and Richard Thompson to rebuild the group, which soldiered on into the 70′s, content merely to play for fun. They all conceded that 1984 had been a good, solid, and popular local band, but that it didn’t have the necessary spark or originality to transform into a great one.
The Left Handed Marriage
ln the summer of 1965, in another corner of Hampton Grammar School, Brian May’s old friend Bill Richards (who had been a fleeting, early member of 1984 before it acquired its futuristic name), and his colleagues Jenny Hill (née Rusbridge), Henry Deval and Terry Goulds, formed a folk-rock band called the Left-Handed Marriage, named after an archaic form of marrying beneath oneself. By January 1967, the quartet had progressed to the point where they had issued their own privately-pressed album, “On The Right Side Of The Left Handed Marriage", which ran to just fifty copies (and, incidentally, has since acquired cult status among collectors, with a £600 price tag to match).
Although naturally familiar with the album, Brian May as yet had not been involved with the band. That changed in March 1967, after Bill signed a twelve-month contract with EMI's music publishing company Ardmore & Beechwood — a deal secured through the efforts of Brian Henderson, a former member of Edinburgh beat outfit the Mark Five, and more recently, the bassist in Patrick Campbell- Lyons' 60′s psychodelic band, Nirvana. Bill approached Brian to help him create a “fuller" sound for the Left Handed Marriage, with a request to provide guitar and backing vocals on some recording sessions.
On the understanding that the project wouldn’t interfere with his commitment to 1984, Brian agreed. On 4th April 1967, he joined Jenny, Henry, Terry and Bill in AMC Sound, an amateur studio in Manor Road, Twickenham, to record four songs: “Give Me Time” (later changed to “I Need Time"), "She Was Once My Friend", “Sugar Lump Girl” and “Yours Sincerely” (which was basically “Give Me Time" backwards, with new lyrics pinched from the Russian author Pushkin).
The songs were all cleanly-recorded, melodic atempts at 1967 pop (despite the Left Handed Marriage's later classification, there's little actual folk music in evidence). “She Was Once My Friend" is the pick of the bunch, thanks to its Kinks-like structure — complete with Bill Richard's/ Ray Davies-soundalike vocal and, albeit way down in the mix, flashes of that distinctive Brian May 'Red Special’ guitar sound. Acetates of the AMC EP were cut, and the idea had been to release the songs as a commercial EP. Instead, the set merely became the Left Handed Marriage’s first demo for their publishers, although it did lead to the offer to record at a more professional session — at EMI’s prestigious Abbey Road studios.
The Abbey Road session took place on 28th June 1967, when Left Handed Marriage were joined by Brian and 1984′s Dave Dilloway, who was drafted in to play bass. Two further tracks were cut: the reworked “I Need Time",...[ ]
...[ ] and a new song called “Appointment". At this stage, there was more talk of issuing a record, this time a single, and a release date of August was even discussed. This never materialised either, and again 7″ acetates are all that remain.
Although Ardmore & Beechwood were pleased with the results, they still thought the Left Handed Marriage could improve their sound even further, and on 31st July 1967, they booked the band into another studio, this time Regent Sound in central London. As Dave Dilloway was not available, another friend, John Frankel, was called upon to play bass and piano. The eight-track Regent Sound machine was something of a technological marvel, and the session was flawlessly recorded, resulting in new versions of “I Need Time”, “She Was Once My Friend" (which also remixed and edited for the abandoned single), and "Appointment".
Despite the studio quality of the tape, Ardmore & Beechwood failed to place the songs with a record label, and like so many groups before and since, the Left Handed Marriage quietly disappeared from view. It was left to frontman Bill Richards belatedly to issue the fruits of this last session, when in February 1993, he tagged the three Regent Sound recordings — the final mix of “I Need Time”, the abridged version of “She Was Once A Friend Of Mine” and the final mix of “Appointment” — onto the end of “Crazy Chain”, a CD recorded by the reformed Left Handed Marriage, which itself was prompted by collector's interest in the group’s original 1967 LP, “The Right Hand Side Of...” . Most of the master tapes for the LHM recordings featuring Brian May have Iong since disappeared along with the Regent Sound studio, and (with the exception of "She Was Once My Friend") the Richards/May collaborations on the CD were digitally remastered from acetates.

TFP Megatronus x Orion Pax Experimental Concept Playlist: The Timescale of Cybertronian Lives + Music from 1890 - 2021
I know there are tons of playlists for these characters out there, but I’m trying to do something a little less conventional with this one; Please hear me out!
Two Playlists in One: Love Throughout The Ages
The first half of this playlist is almost all new music mixed in with some hits from the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc. to give variety, plus tracks from different genres so that hopefully everyone has a song they can enjoy in there somewhere.
For the second half of the playlist, I wanted to emphasise the idea of how long the war on Cybertron has been going on for, and just how old this conflict and the people involved actually are.
Cybertronian Timescale: Long Lives and The Perception of Time
We think of the Orion Pax / Megatronus stage of their relationship as being relatively brief, which it was in comparison to how long the war has been going on for as of TFP, but these are people who live for centuries. The scope of that is staggering.
Optimus Prime and Megatron have known each other personally (either positively or negatively) for longer than modern human civilisation has existed.
So to me, the best way to touch on that idea of time, musically, is to have the first half of the playlist be modern music, remixes, etc. and then the second half is well known and lesser known hits throughout early radio/TV (with many tracks on this playlist pre-dating those forms of media as well).
What’s on the Playlist, Then?
My grandmother was born in 1914, and her music collection spans nearly 100 years. It’s all good stuff.
I have included some of her favourites, which she always called her “sweetheart jingles”, on this soundtrack. I think many of them work surprisingly well for the Megatronus/Orion Pax relationship.
Many of these songs will probably be unknown by the vast majority of people who might want to listen to this playlist, which is also appealing to me. (I hope if this is your first time hearing some of these, that you enjoy a few of them!)
My parents were born in 1944, and I remember all of the classics they would play; Some of those tracks will be more recognisable as this was the era when radio and TV became far more common and accessible, but I picked the tracks that I think best apply to the pairing and the relationship between the two characters at that point in their lives.
The link to the playlist is below after some notes on Cybertronian language evolution!
Quick Thought: Cybertronian Language Over Time and Era Specific Speech Patterns
While thinking about my grandmother’s music collection as I assembled this playlist, I thought about some of the words and phrases she used commonly that are now totally non-existent in modern conversational English.
She had what would probably sound to most people like “1930s radio voice” or a more Trans-Atlantic Accent way of speaking; She grew up in the Northeast USA and so she had a very distinctive way of stressing the vowels in words. It’s not just the words themselves, or how they were pronounced, but the tone and pace of speech was also very different.
This got me thinking about Cybertronians, age, and speech:
Bots as old as Ratchet may have grown up with a totally different spoken language version of Cybertronian, and we already know that there are regional dialects, multiple written forms (glyphs), and era-specific types of Cybertronian language.
But the way they speak, as I mentioned above with the stressing of vowels and the tone and pace of speech, might still be different due to the different eras, even after language packs/programs are downloaded and updated periodically as needed. We already know Cybertronians have regional accents, so it stands that generational accents would also possibly exist as well.
Such a difference in speech patterns could possibly be used as a primary indicator of relative age on Cybertron, as physically they don’t age in the sense human beings do.
Back to the Playlist: Link + Track List + Notes on Audio Prior to 1930
The playlist is here on YouTube.
Scroll down to get to the second half (oldies section) if that’s what you’re here for!
Please note that the songs are not arranged in any particular order aside from the first half being newer music and the second half being far older music.
Also note, where original recordings are available on YouTube for some of the older songs, I have used those original recording versions.
However, keep in mind that there may be a couple seconds of “fuzz” at the top (start) of those older tracks, because they have been recorded from records or wax cylinders, which are formats of music that typically had a “pause” on the track to allow for needle and speed calibration when playing them manually. Modern records don’t do this in quite the same way and nobody uses wax cylinders anymore, but older records typically did. If this bothers you, skip ahead about two seconds or so, and it will resolve.
Tempo may seem slightly “fast” on two of the tracks due to difficulties with the medium and modern recording tech/methods, and one track has some persistent “fuzz” throughout due to the original recording being rare and therefore it is a “best copy available” type archival recording, but otherwise I’ve managed to find the clearest audio possible for the vast majority of the older songs!
(Fun music note, the “click track” in modern digital music was partially inspired by the clicking of the needle hitting the “countdown grooves” on old cylinders and records, which creates an audible mild clicking sound as the needle finds the groove and provides time for usually a half rotation or full rotation of the record before the track actually begins to allow for adjustment before the music starts! If the clicking is too fast, dial down the rotation speed, for example.
This itself was inspired by classical metronomes as well as the actual physical method of playing the music in this way, but it’s cool to see how this persists throughout musical history even now when we don’t need the click for digital production for quite the same reasons/applications. It’s all about timing, no matter the medium or era!)
Due to the method of how some player piano rolls were credited, often by roll company and not by individuals, the actual artist name is often not available for those tracks. Where possible and where known, I have included credits to the artists/musicians. I have done my best to research and find the artists in these recordings.
I have also included orchestrions and other “automated” music in addition to a player piano track as I think it’s interesting; These are often very old compositions being played on these machines, and as such are designed to reflect the earliest days of their relationship.
Songs range from the years 1890 to 2021, and I will add more as I manage to find YouTube videos with some of the older songs I’m still looking for.
By the way, if you need a love song for like an actual partner or crush that you have, I’m just going to say it now and point out that a lot of these classics are great to use in real life for cute purposes. My partner of ten years agrees, and my grandparents were married for over 60 years and sang many of these daily, so obviously something here works well. You’re welcome. ;)
Below the cut is a track list of the second half of the playlist, as it’s 7 AM and I’d like to emphasise the “classics” section here as it’s the central theme of the concept.
I will add to this list as more tracks are added:
You’re the Top - Cole Porter
What is this Thing Called Love - Leslie Hutchinson
I Get a Kick Outta You - Cole Porter
Puttin on the Ritz - Phil Spitalny Orchestra
What a Day - Carl Fenton

Love Potion no. 9 - The Clovers (Please note, this song mentions the word “g*psy” once in the beginning of the track. Skip this song if you would prefer not to hear it; I have done my best to only include songs that are friendly to the modern listener, but where needed I will make annotations such as this one to ensure nobody has to hear anything potentially offensive, as is unfortunately often the case with older music/lyrics.)
Come a Little Bit Closer - Jay and the Americans
Sh-Boom - The Crew Cuts
Oh Boy - Buddy Holly

Too Smart for Your Own Good: Part 1
Pairings: Machine Gun Kelly x Reader, (Past and Future) Henry Cavill x Reader
Warnings: Swearing, one night stand, unprotected sex
Word Count: 2,551
A/N: Doesn’t have a completed end yet, but just giving you more content to try to get myself out of a writing funk.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So there’s something you need to know about my cousin.” Ashleigh sighed as she took her ID back from the guard at the gate of your very exclusive Malibu community. Colson looked over at his best friend and manager as she ran her fingers through her hair and looked out the front window for a moment. With a small shake of her head, she looked over at him with a small sigh. “She’s weird, OK? And like… stupid rich.”
“Stupid rich.” He confirmed with a huff as the guard got off the phone with you and let your guests into the beach side development. “What, you got a fucking actor in your family I don’t know about, Ash?” Your cousin sighed again, trying to figure out just how to explain the one branch of her blood line no one really ever talked to or about.
“She discovered a new branch of stars and like micro planets and shit in the Milky Way that no one knew existed… when she was eleven.” Kels felt his jaw actually drop as his friend continued past the extravagant houses to the only gate guarded house at the very end of the road. “So her grandmother, Ann was the woman that invented the baby carrier in the 60’s for her son, my Uncle Negan, who is now the president of a motorcycle gang in LA- the Sanctuary? You heard of them?”
“Heard of ‘em.” He confirmed with a nod as he looked up at what he could see of the massive house through the slow moving bars of your personal gate.
“He married my mom’s sister, Lucille, and they had (Y/N). Aunt Lucille died in child birth, and Negan and my family got in a huge fight over who was a better fit to raise my cousin. With all the money that she was lined up to get, it was almost a sickening free for all for my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. But in the midst of the arguing, it turned out she was genius level smart. Like Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory was literally loosely based off her and she gets royalties off that shit. And after seeing all of the fighting going on over her for no reason, she convinced her dad to write us all off as a toddler. Which he happily did because he does anything his little girl asks him to do. She doesn’t talk to any of the older generations of my family but she talked to must of the cousins occasionally as long as they weren’t asking for money. Which, in the end, basically left me because I just see her as my cousin and not for her money.” Kels nodded his head slowly as Ashleigh parked her car and turned off the ignition.
“She’s an amazing person that has had one hell of a life because of her circumstances. Picked on for being rich, for being smart… for actually remembering her mother’s death. And it doesn’t help that her dad is in a gang or that he’s in prison for manslaughter or something like that.” Ashleigh shook her head again and grabbed her purse off the back seat to go inside. “She never had a chance. But I love coming up here when I come to town…”
“You better have my love child with you!” You shouted as you headed up the stairs on the side of your house that ran along the edge of the cliff which acted like a giant privacy wall for the left side your property. “Hi, I’m all sandy but still.”
“He’s with me.” Ash giggled as you wiped your hands off on your short jean shorts and stopped for only half a second to kiss her cheek. “I need a favor.”
“This is not favor town, Ash.” You said as you pulled open the back door to coo at your second cousin, Ashton. “This is Auntie love time! Hi munchkin!”
“(Y/N), this is Colson Baker, AKA Kels, or Machine Gun Kelly.”
“Kels is fine.” Colson said as you tossed Ashton up in the air a few inches to make him laugh.
“Mr. Baker works just as well.” You cooed to your cousin as you put him on your hip and turned to head inside. “Because I’m going to assume that the favor the pair of you need involves him, which leads me to deduce that this is a business transaction of some kind. You may either follow, or stand in my driveway all day, either option is acceptable in the world today. Freedoms and whatnot. Unless you are waiting for a formal invitation in which case, I’d be more than happy to write one up for you.”
“Her social skills with new people aren’t the best either.” Ashleigh whispered as low as she physically possibly could as she slung her bag over her shoulder and followed you toward the wrought iron gate at the entrance of your atrium. “But it’s better when you get to know her…”
“I can hear you talking shit, bitch.” You said evenly as you stopped and held the gate open for your guests. You gave the stranger to you a once over with your eyebrow raised as he passed by you and gave him a slight half nod. “I don’t see the purpose of small talk and sarcasm is the best defense in the world.”
“Small talk is over-rated.” Kels agreed as he, too, checked you out as shamelessly as you had. “Nice ink.”
“Save it.” You huffed with a smirk as you walked through the guest atrium and pushed open your ten foot tall, solid wood, pivot hinge front door to reveal the breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean you had. “What do you need? Yes, I’m putting you down.” You giggled as you set Ashton down on the floor and reached down for his hand to lead him over so he could push the window button, which made the glass panels slide open like doors into the walls so he could play out in the little private yard you had.
“Well… OK, so every year…” Ashleigh started as you helped Ashton into his favorite swing. “…we put on this concert for Christmas called XXmas. It’s fuckin’ crazy and it’s been sold out the last few years easy. It’s a two hour long set and they do some local Cleveland rappers for openers. (Y/N), you gotta see it some time. I mean, the following that Kels has managed to create…”
“The concert is in two days.” Colson interrupted when he noticed the slight hint of annoyance on your face. “And my guitarist broke his arm in a car accident last night. Now, Ash says you’re some kinda musical genius or some shit and you’d be able to help…?”
“I have plans.” You stated evenly as you kept your eyes locked on the toddler in front of you.
“It’s one night.” Ashleigh breathed, pleadingly as she took a step closer to you so you’d almost be forced to look up at her. “One night and I can make sure you are on a plane back that night or early the next morning. I’ll even pay for a private jet out of my own pocket to get you back on time to see your dad for Christmas if I have to.” With an audible sigh, you looked up at your cousin with a small shake of your head.
“Fuck you.”
“I love you, too.” She beamed, knowing that you were never going to say no to helping her out. You rolled your eyes and growled as you continued to push your cousin.
“Alright, play your songs. Which ever ones you want me to know, start playing them before I change my mind.” Colson looked a little stunned and glanced over at Ashleigh, who quickly pulled out her phone and nodded.
“She has an eidetic memory. All she needs to do is hear it once and she can memorize it.”
“Changing my mind over here.” You joked, flatly as you shot her an annoyed glare. “And it’s too close to Christmas to fight with flights so I’ll hire a jet. Hope your tickets are refundable.”
——
You choose to spend the four and a half hour flight sitting in the back of the private jet, with three different head phones in, listening to the full set list on repeat in your right ear, a narrated dissertation of someones research on further exploration of one of your original dissertations about the Milky Way’s cannibalism of surrounding stars in your left, and the feed back from your electric guitar in the head set you had over both ear buds. Your dad always told you you were crazy when you ‘nerded out’ like this, not being able to understand how you were able to have three different forms of audio stimulus going at the same time, nor how you could differentiate and focus on all three simultaneously. Even though you had your eyes closed, you could see the shift in the sun light in front of you and no matter how much you tried to ignore the feeling of eyes boring into your face, you couldn’t.
“This better be good.” You sighed as you pulled off your head set and pulled out both ear buds in an attempt to look civil.
“Three head phones?” Colson asked as you dropped the hardware in your lap and paused the two recordings on your phone.
“Keeping up with a dissertation from a colleague, listening to the set list, and messing around with it on my guitar.” You told him as you pointed to the corresponding head sets.
“Messing around with the set?” He asked as he scooted forward a bit in his chair and looked at the classic honey burst Les Paul on your lap. “Gunna share with the class?”
“Didn’t plan on it.” You responded as you tucked your legs up on the chair and held out one of the headphones. “But I’ll indulge all the same.” He nodded his head and put only one side over his ear while you handed him the other music headphone, put the original one in your ear, and pulled up the next track on the list. Your eyes closed again as the opening cords for ‘Rehab’ started playing, and you jumped right in with the riff that you had wrote in your head more to play for your father when you went to see him for Christmas.
“You wrote that?” Colson asked when you had finished. “You write music, too?!”
“No. No, I don’t.” You said quickly as you took back your headphones from him and put the extra ear bud away. “I… well, I remix songs. For my dad, mostly. When I go and visit… well I have a guitar there, and on nicer days, we sit outside and play name that tune. And I get my competitive side from him so I’ve gotten really good at recreating songs so that he can’t guess them but so they still sound like the original track.”
“So what’s he in for?” He asked innocently, which made you instantly stiffen and throw a wall up.
“Does it matter?” You retorted a little sharply. “He’s in prison.”
“Yo, my bad.” He said quickly as he held his hands up in surrender. “Didn’t know it was a touchy subject.” You nodded your head and glanced down at your lap as you started putting your headphones back in.
“Look, I’m not here to make friends, Mr. Baker. I’m here to help out some family, then I’m going home. That’s all. I don’t need friends…”
“Yea, you fucking got it.” He barked back as he got up from his chair to go back to his friends. With a shake of your head, you started your music and your paper back up, and slipped back into your anti-social bubble for a little bit longer.
——
You had never been an adrenaline junkie in your life, having had enough experiences with the club, but as you stood on the stage, playing through the set, you actually started craving the feeling. The high that the crowd was creating, feeding your soul and the music pouring out of the speakers behind you. You felt like a total rock star and you were glad that this feeling was something that you would remember forever.
It hadn’t taken you long into the set for you to notice Kels either, and not just notice, but really notice him. How sexy he looked in his low slung red pants with his ethika boxers peeking out. You hated that you were turned on by this stupid punk… but fuck if you couldn’t help but want to fuck his brains out. Even if his kid was only a hundred feet away from you, even if you never planned on seeing or speaking to him ever again. You almost needed to be under his sweat drenched body as fast as you could or your head was going to explode.
“She smiles.” Colson teased when the last cords of the last song faded away in the auditorium. You smirked and pulled out your ear phones as you handed off Ace’s guitar to the stage hand.
“Occasionally. Only when I’m having a really good time.” He nodded his head and looked around for a moment before grabbing your arm and turning you toward a side stage door. “Colson…?”
“You… are driving me fucking crazy.” He growled as he locked the door behind him with a shake of his head. “And I want to be pissed off at you for being a bitch for no fucking reason… but fuck I wanna fuck you way to Goddamn bad.”
“Oh, fuck…” You moaned as he pushed you back against a shelving unit and quickly started ripping at your jean shorts button. “Kels… the crew… your daughter…”
“Guess I’ll just have to be quick then.” You whined at him as he shoved your bottoms off, and lifted you up off the floor by the backs of your thighs. He pushed his boxers and pants down only as far as he needed, and slid into you. Your eyes rolled back and you grabbed on to his shoulder and the shelving unit you were pressed up against. It was short, quick, and dirty, and you both got off within a couple minutes, but it was absolutely worth it… until it wasn’t.
“Thanks for helping out… and not just on stage…” Colson said, almost dismissively as you both pulled up your bottoms. You let out a huff and ran your fingers through your hair.
“Do me a favor and don’t even so much as think my fucking name ever again.” You snapped as you pushed past him and threw the door to the closet open. You walked quickly to the green room, grabbed your bag and your guitar case off the floor and pulled out your phone to call a cab as Ashleigh called out your name from across the room. As a lone tear fell down your cheek, you simply walked away from her, back through the stadium halls, and out the back door, leaving your brief lapse of judgement in the janitors closet behind you.
The process starts.
I got the package from the tube pusher.
It is not simple doing this.
All new tubes and my test meters hooked into the external test points I rigged. It takes at least an hour to get it settled in if everything goes perfectly.
There was a glitch or a hold over from the previous tube set. I stopped after 3 hours of fiddling. The Bias went well. about 20 minutes after I took this picture I had the 65mv reading I needed. The left had side was off by 2mv, but that is well within the limits the manual sets.
There is a second step that has you check and adjust a servo device that controls some of the tube bias. The right hand side was almost perfect. The left hand side not so much.
I assume that the previous tube set had a bit of a mismatch as the target of 0.2 mv across the noted test points was 12mv on the left side. I got it way down, but each adjustment takes about 30 minutes to settle. So much fun, and I had to go to bed.
Even with all the bother I saved a lot of time and messing about having my external test points. ARC really should provide this as standard. Dynaco did way back in the 1950s. I understand more recent models have automatic bias. That would be nice, but I cannot afford those beasts. They cost as much as a nice car.
I hope you get the impression that even though I do not have a work bench that I do have a well equipped living room floor. I don't want to haul the thing around anyway it is very heavy.
While I was fiddling and trying to explain what I was doing to my frowning wife I could not help but think about the vacuum aficionados who roll tube sets for fun. Certainly this is one of the more difficult models to do this, but it is expensive nevertheless. I could not help but wonder if the effects these people hear as good and bad are due to the poor thing being out of adjustment.
I am glad that I do not need a technician or repair guy to do this. There is a long wait list around here. They charge $150 bucks an hour for labor.
Oh the joy of vacuum tube audio!
Could You Make 12 Minutes To Spare Today?
Although not everyone can make 60 minutes to meditate, it is generally possible to carve out 12 minutes for yourself at some point.
Why Meditation with Zen12 is Better?
I once read this story about a Zen master who was teaching a group of new students how to properly meditate.
Together this group meditated for 30 minutes.
At the end of the session, the Zen master asked the students how much clarity they were able to achieve.
Most students answered that they had achieved no clarity at all.
The ones that said they had mentioned that it had only been a few seconds of clarity.
Then the Zen master told the class something that shocked them all.
He said that out of those 30 minutes where they had been meditating together, he had only achieved 2 minutes of clarity.
He described it as an outstanding meditation session.
Imagine… the experts on meditation only get 2 minutes of clarity for 30 minutes of work.
That has really stuck with me over time. There’s a lot of hassle to receive a very small benefit.
This is why meditation with Zen12 could be better.
According to Inspire3, you can double the benefits this Zen master described to his class in just 12 minutes because of the innovative design of the program.
This means one could potentially receive 4 minutes of clarity if the skill of meditation was equal to this Zen master.
Now imagine being able to accomplish this meditation benefit in just 12 minutes.
The benefits begin immediately.
According to Zen12, the fidgeting begins to stop. The restlessness begins to fade away. The mental chatter begins to quiet down.
The end result?
A state of total relaxation.
Is Zen12 a Scam? Or Is it a Proven System of Meditation?
Zen12 is based on a system of meditation that is called “brainwave entrainment.”
It works by tuning the brain to reach specific frequencies that help to encourage the states of relaxation and meditation.
Sounds embedded within the MP3 files work to align your brainwave patterns so that you remain awake and aware, yet also can sense the deeper states of relaxation and mediation.
This is an area of science that has been researched for over a century.
This also means that Zen12 is a system that will grow and develop with you.
With each session, you’ll gradually progress deeper and further into the next levels of meditation.
You’ll begin to see the benefits of regular meditation grow and expand!
Each month creates new opportunities and there are 12 different levels within Zen12, so you can have a year of meditation development for a surprisingly affordable price!
Even if you’ve been meditating for awhile and you feel like you’re stuck at where you’re at, Zen12 can help you too!
You can save some time and skip the beginning levels of this meditation program to pick up where you currently are.
You can even choose the meditation style that works the best for you!
Whether you prefer the sounds of nature, some background white noise, relaxation music, or guided meditation, you’ll be able to experience the benefits of meditation from the moment you first hit play.
Because each program has 12 different levels, here’s the positive reality a purchase today brings you: 4 years of meditation assistance.
Zen12 Short Review: How It Works
Zen12 is a program which consists of short audio-based meditation sessions.
Each session requires 12 minutes of your time, which is how this program gets its name.
There are longer sessions in the 20-minute range near the end of the program to use as well.
Each module within Zen12 is designed to bring you toward the habit of committing a full 60 minutes of your day to meditation.
It is a progressive program which is designed to take 12 months to complete.
There are 12 sessions in total, which makes it easy to see how the progression is designed to work.
There are 4 different formats which are available with each session: white noise, nature sounds, music, and guided meditation.
You get to choose the format which you feel will be the best option on that day for meditation.
Then you listen to the program during your meditation time, even if you can only commit 12 minutes toward it.
What is nice about this setup is that you’re given variety.
Many audio-based meditation programs give you a take-it-or-leave-it option.
Don’t like the track? Too bad.
Not Zen12.
In addition to the audio meditation tracks you’ll receive with this program, there are some extra things which come with your purchase.
You’ll receive two short e-books from Karl Moore. The advice in the content will help you think about your mindset as you pursue your own definition of success.
There is a user’s guide, though this is a one-page introduction to the program and not much more.
The user manual is a better resource.
You’ll receive an overview of each level, along with practical advice for beginner’s or experienced meditators.
Your program includes a 1-hour training call with Zen12, which includes a recorded introduction from Karl Moore.
Once you’re ready to listen to the audio meditation tracks, it is helpful to create a comfortable environment for yourself.
Eliminate potential distractions wherever possible. I prefer to meditate in a space that has been darkened.
Then you play the audio while you meditate.
As long as the audio can be heard in the room where you are meditating, it will be helpful.
I prefer to use a set of stereo headphones and listen to the audio tracks over Bluetooth to avoid the stimulation of a computer screen.
You can use whatever equipment you prefer.
As long as your environment is suitable for meditation that meets your needs, this program will provide focus assistance.
What I’ve found to be useful with Zen12 is that it removes the issues I struggle with when attempting to meditate.
Like the mental chatter. When I try to take time in a quiet space, that is when my thoughts like to race.
There are to-do lists, worries of the past, and plans for the future which all come flooding toward me.
Zen12 helps me acknowledge these thoughts, then set them aside to continue focusing on the meditation process.
I also tend to fidget a lot when sitting still.
Do you feel every itch on your skin when you’re trying to focus on something?
Does it feel like there is something crawling on your feet or hands?
That issue went away for me when I started using Zen12.
Now some might describe this program as a “miracle” cure for focus issues or a “must-have program” to get “amazing” meditation results.
I prefer a more practical solution.
Being someone who is familiar with meditation and a regular practitioner, I did find Zen12 to be immediately helpful in my weaker areas.
For a beginner, there is still the issue of establishing a habit of meditation.
No program can make the decision to meditate for you.
It is something you must choose to do on your own.
In my experience, when meditating becomes easier to do, then it becomes fun.
When meditation is fun, it becomes easier to make it a priority.
When meditation is a priority, then I make time for it every day somehow.
Zen12 makes meditation become fun again.
Are You Ready To Experience Meditation Like Never Before? With Zen12 it’s possible!
For many, meditation has remained out of reach because it is often difficult to achieve individual results when you’re on your own – especially for the first time.
Zen12 changes that dynamic and puts all of those advantages within your reach.
All you’ve got to do is grasp them!
All you’ve got to do is choose the level of meditation where you feel the most comfortable.
You then just click play for your MP3.
There are no special instructions, poses, or requirements that need to be met for Zen12 to work.
You just listen and then you get to experience the enhanced benefits of meditation, sometimes from the very first session!
With support videos, user guides, and a special email address that you can use for any questions that you may have, Zen12 is one of the easiest guided meditation, brainwave entrainment programs that you are going to find anywhere.
In 2017, more DJs took advantage of the one detail that makes their artwork kind truly unique: they'll play anything. Nina Kraviz, regardless of the absurd controversy it as soon as brought on her, continued colouring exterior the strains, be it with a hundred and fifty BPM techno or straight up drum & bass, on the principle stage at EXIT Competition or in room one at Unsound's Lodge Forum. Rock and pop bands use the identical quantity of instrumentation on stage, which is normally two guitars, one set of drums, and one bass guitar. One other similarity is the variety of musicians on stage which includes: vocals, guitar players, bass player, drum participant, and again vocals. The last similarity is the way both type bands perform. Both styles carry out with a robust stage presence, being very energetic on stage. Some examples of bands which might be pop bands and are confused as rock bands are: ‘N Sync, Backstreet Boys, and Justin Bieber. Music in America is at the moment in an interesting place. The internet has made it easier than ever for artists to release their music for the world to hear, but on the same time it might probably feel like a smaller group of artists is capturing the highest of the charts. Still, with regards to touring exhibits and local scenes rock and nation musicians are serving to to carry followers together all throughout the country. While the charts is likely to be dominated by music that's streamed over telephones and computer systems the local concert venues are filled with people searching for that traditional combination of drums, a guitar, and a singer that can make them really feel something. Eminem!? Eminem is amazing. I like to recommend looking into his music. My favourite genres are Various, Grunge, and Rock. Eminem has meaningful music. I am okay with you not liking him, but categorizing him with the others talked about? No. Just. No. Before John Lennon and http://www.audio-transcoder.com Paul McCartney's songwriting partnership turned the dominant drive of ‘60s fashionable music, there was Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, who were a hit-making duo in rock & roll's earliest days. Elvis made their song Hound Dog"—recorded quite a few times by numerous artists as early as 1953—famous in 1956, and when Presley's new film 'Jailhouse Rock' got here out the next year, they had a monitor ready just for him.
Music based upon a rhythm style, which is characterized by regular chops on the backbeat, performed by a rhythm guitarist. Reggae is an African-Caribbean style of music developed on the island of Jamaica and carefully linked to the faith of Rastafarianism (though not universally popular amongst its members). Some school students discover that one of the best music to study by is so-called put up-rock music. It's a numerous genre that includes many bands that focus totally on enjoying instrumental music with none vocals. Nevertheless, some bands do embrace restricted vocals with hard-to-discern lyrics. Which Music Genres Have The Loyalest Fans?
I do know that Google has a Music Timeline, but it surely's horrendous. For instance, you may say, In the refrain of ‘Poses,' Rufus Wainwright sets his first line of textual content to a long, arching melody, reminiscent of opera." This describes the music and lets the reader know what part you're talking about and the way you are hearing it (it reminds you of opera). Now inform the reader what is important about this. What does it do for the which means of the textual content? The text means that ‘you said watch my head about it,' however this rising operatic melody seems to counsel that the singer is de facto floating away and gone into one other world." Now your description of the music features as proof in an argument about how the track has two layers of that means (text and music).
10 years ago The Libertines promised British music a lot, but twenty first Century songwriter Alex Turner and his Sheffield friends were waiting in the wings. Since 2005 they've delivered the goods in the form of head-speeding punk, whip-smart lyrical acrobatics and earworming melodies which have been mercilessly copied, however never bettered. The first British group to emerge from the as soon as-fresh, now-compromised arena of social media buzz", they've continued to stand slightly outdoors, trying in. That scepticism is almost as beneficial a commodity as their increasingly assured musical chops, now encompassing contemporary R&B slink, Zep-esque riffage, plus '60s beat and torch-pop. Memphis blues is a type of blues music that was pioneering within the early a part of the twentieth century by musicians like Sleepy John Estes and Willie Nix, associated with vaudeville and medication shows. It was in the Memphis blues that groups of musicians first assigned one guitarist to play rhythm, and one to play lead and solos - this has change into commonplace in rock and roll and far of in style music. In addition, the jug band arose from the Memphis blues, mixing the sound with jazz and utilizing homemade, simple instruments. Given the strong and statistically important modularity illustrated in ( Fig 2 ) and detailed in ( Fig 3 ), the analysis suggests that genre distinctions strongly structure the self-presentation of contemporary well-liked musicians. This dataset doesn't enable us to compare the energy of those conventions to the previous (the place a lot of the extant literature claims that genre conventions are weakening over time), nevertheless it does point out that, at least as of 2007, the boundaries between style worlds were far from extinction. As a lot as traditional musical genres could have been rhetorically subdivided time and again, these subdivisions still cohere collectively, working inside distinct boundaries quite than by way of free mixing of musical kinds.
Maybe enjoyable rock music is still being made however it is not being performed on my local alternative station, so I'm not aware of it. It looks like pretentiousness has taken over rock music. If a music doesn't have a critical meaning, it has no proper to exist. Rock fans decry the dying of "actual music." It is a flip off to many people who want music to serve totally different purposes. Sometimes, it ought to be enjoyable. Typically, it needs to be critical. Typically it needs to be about issues we are able to relate to whether that is falling in love or a painful breakup. Typically it might take care of social issues. Having written about my very own private musical indoctrination — listening to Granny's Intentions — above, my inclusion of Westlife in this record could appear strange and out of character. But, and in all equity to this boyband, they've achieved global success and popularity, and if that could be a measure of greatness, properly, so be it. Well the kind of music that I like to listen to is rap and hip-hop. I like that form of music because the songs sound cool; and because of what they are saying. Lil Wayne sings cool, I like all of the songs that he has made, they rock. I like hip-hop because there are some singers that sing cool and have made some cool songs like Drake; he sings cool and he type of raps too. That's the kind of music that I like to listen to. This pathfinder is intended to facilitate interdisciplinary analysis in conventional Southern music types for undergraduate or graduate college students of music, folklore, American Studies, history, cultural research, Southern studies and related disciplines. Particularly, it identifies multimedia resources at UNC-Chapel Hill and on-line to assist students better perceive both the context (social, lyrical, and musical origins, influences, and impacts) and the content (forms, themes, and instrumentation) of conventional Southern music types.
Electronic music has developed into several genres of fashionable music. In the Nineties, techno grew to become a preferred dance music that's still occurring. Techno developed into EDM and dubstep, that are each in style. One other treasure from the most exciting time within the historical past of pop music. The production is not nice —hey, it was 1964—however "Walk on By" is nevertheless a slice of pop perfection. It has a very effortless quality to it. The important thing feature of Jazz is improvisation. Jazz is modern, inflatable, unpredictable, and seems to always be looking out to improve itself. vi The style keeps evolving as more and more artists add their very own aptitude to its unique state. Then again, Blues music is a bit more conservative and draws from folklore, making it much less adaptable becuase folklore a kind of historical past of the previous and true occasions that are not at all times changeable.
That is an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical style-house, primarily based on knowledge tracked and analyzed for 1536 genres by Spotify. The calibration is fuzzy, but basically down is extra organic, up is extra mechanical and electrical; left is denser and extra atmospheric, proper is spikier and bouncier. The underside line (for now) is that it is laborious to conclude definitively that classical music is all the time the perfect musical possibility to improve memory. It may be a more complicated mix of music that calms the brain to let more sensory experience in but additionally increases our emotional connection to the expertise, so there's extra sensory information generated for our brains to soak up. Two years in the past, AndersonPaak's breakthrough album turned him into one of the most impressive rising stars in hip-hop. His sound, alongside with his dynamic, effervescent live show, made him among the many most fun rising musicians. Now, as many younger stars in his place notice, he must discover a stability of the art and the fame. Thankfully, Kendrick Lamar is the right mentor (and collaborator) forPaak. Collectively, their vocal types mesh effortlessly, along with their dedication to the craft, which is never positioned above movie star standing. Tints" is a surprising celebration of this stability, Audio-Transcoder.Com a song that would work as a serious radio single but also an announcement from a young artist who refuses to fall into that cliche droop after success. It additionally marksPaak's unimaginable talent for perfectly bending genres to suit his will—on this case funk, pop, and hip-hop—into a sound totally his own.
